Just thought I'd add my noob point of view. I've been playing for 2 weeks now - first thing I did after some basic reading and account creation was to sign up for CDT. It doesn't start still for 3 more days, and I've been highly anticipating it. However, this has left me with two weeks of hours and hours of reading and less hours of game time. Reading that Nix don't have nans has definatley been one of the 5 hundred concepts I've attempted to absorb - would I remember it in game play?- maybe, maybe not.Jagnara wrote:QUOTE (Jagnara @ Sep 18 2007, 01:10 AM) please. for the love of your god, join the cadet program. i am sure you will find it very very advantageous and informative... i am so so tired of v-noobs asking where then nans are when they are playing nix. it is depressing. let's learn about allegiance first please, then play with confidence and ability to actually help the team without having to have a class during an SB run; it is not convenient. thank you. join, join cadet now. join and be happy (and educated).
I'd like to add that most experienced players I've run into in game have either been generally helpful, or at least not humiliated me too badly for the numerous stupid mistakes I've made. Thank You.
If you see me in-game, and can afford to teach a moron, please feel free to say "Hey Hawk, follow me and do what I do.." or any other message that could be helpful. I'd definatly enjoy being more helpful and spend less time tring to figure out what I should be doing.
I'm sure there are plenty of idiots who won't read or don't care - please realize not all of us are...
Thanks, Hawk

I can agree w/ Hawk. Not all noobs are noobs to the core. Some can understand concepts and most are good with following orders when you lay out exactly what they are suppose to do. This morning as soon as a (#) joined i told him to get into a scout and nanite the bomber for the upcoming bomb run. he hopped in his scout loaded the nanite and followed the bomber.
So not all noobs are worthless, some just need to keep the training wheels on until they can ride that bike on their own. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

@CDT is good, but it isn't the only way.
I consider myself someone who managed to learn the game enough to be semi-competent before I did Cadet. Frankly, I only joined Cadet so I could gain access to the excellent wealth of written information. As far as I'm concerned, the more of that information is "public," the better.

good for you sushi, but everyone is not that "smart". that's why i pointed them to allegiance's first line of defense against perpetual noob-ism.

Cadet was neat and all (cadet was much simpler when i took it), but to be honest i learned 85% of this game not from cadet but from Terra, Raz, and Gest (everyone else in my cadet class hated gestahlt cause he was a "noob basher" /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" /> ).
Cadet + "mentors" = ftw
Cadet + "mentors" = ftw

The type of player you are describing is known as a newb/newbie/newcomer. A newb is new to the game but willing to learn by following advice and observing vets. When asked something the newb listens and attempts it. In time a newb who has taken all the advice vets have to give him and/or completed the cadet programme(successfully) will become a vet.Apocalypse823 wrote:QUOTE (Apocalypse823 @ Sep 20 2007, 02:59 AM) I can agree w/ Hawk. List of things newbs do:
-Listen to instructions from comm (a smart comm)
-Ask vets for advice
-Join cadet
-Try to learn
Meanwhile theres the noob, someone who is also new to the game but thinks he owns at it and does not need help. Noobs seem to find it hard to read the chat and follow advice from other better players. The noob never becomes a vet, instead he becomes a voob.
List of things I've seen noobs/voobs do:
-Try to solo enemy bomb runs
-Fly around in circles when told NOT to
-Use a regular fighter when the team has hvy ints
-Dogfight a minelayer con for 7 minutes
-Other stupid things
Please never get noob confused with a newb.

I don't agree that once a newb listens to vet, and completes cadet, will become a vet.ImANewbie wrote:QUOTE (ImANewbie @ Sep 21 2007, 02:08 AM) A newb is new to the game but willing to learn by following advice and observing vets. This is when the newb becomes a voob, of varying skill. To be a vet, you need to be able to understand the game, without having to rely on other peoples strategies and understanding of the game. This requires a level of self-taught expertise.
Or if your definition of a vet is purely a measure of abilities playing, then you can not say that a newb needs to listen to vets or take cadet, because this is not a clear path to skill.
