Vista Sucks

I don't think it is the Anti-Virus. I have disable it, run directly into the cable modem, tried dialup, safe mode, disabled services, etc with no luck whatsoever. ARGH
SMEG...
and for those who are wondering, I got my name from the Brit sitcom Red Dwarf. It was a common expresion on the show.....

This is why free is always best . . . except in order to play many free games like Allegiance you need to pay for windowsFirebird453_KFC wrote:QUOTE (Firebird453_KFC @ Jul 11 2007, 11:00 PM) Smeg I tried to disable the McAfee firewall also and foward all the proper ports. It doesn't work, you have to completly un-install the firewall for it to work...
OS's aren't that expensive in the long run. Come the end of 2011 I'd've bought 2 OS'es to last me 12 years (W2K & Vista HP), that's like £10 a year /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I love those Vista haters. I'm sure they even don't know why.
The only reason to blame Vista is if you dislike Microsoft on principle. If you run any other MS system I can tell you that they're all the same crap and all for more profit.
Despite the fact that MS OS are generally crap, Vista is definitely an improvement compared to XP. As a gerneral rule for software ... it won't be perfect until the first patch. This applys for any software and since an OS is just to important to cause malfunctions wait until SP1 and keep cool.
Btw the rare problems I encountered were with new games which claim to run on Vista. Allegiance works just fine if you figured out the few new qirks of every new OS.
To give some tips for smeghead:
- make sure you do not use Vista home basic (use home premium at least)
- be sure you've installed Framework 1.1
- run update ASGS manually in your Allegiance folder or run ASGS as admin (In Vista it is not enough to be admin. Rightclick the exe / link and click "run as admin")
- You can't remap your keys ingame if you don't run Allegiance as admin
- if you still encounter troubles use compatibility mode (Wasn't necessary for me)
To help you a bit better you might post at which step you encountered problems and what you've tried so far.

Every new MS OS had bad compatibility. It will grow. I remember the hate back when XP was released same for 2k for 98 for 95 for MS Dos 6 for MS Dos 5. I'm getting bored about this nonsens.
Use Linux or stop bitching. I can't hear it anymore /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />
Edit: compatibility and driver issues are mainly a problem of others not able to write drivers in time for their stuff they sell. It will get better. Btw every game I own which runs on XP runs on Vista as well.

O RLY?
Vista was released for public beta for nearly 6 months. It is an easy thing to think how earlier the IHVs would've gotten the builds. Considering all the equipment without drivers, MS is not in the clear (Come on now, ATI and nVidia don't have fully functional drivers. Its so bad that MS has dropped the requirement for VRAM virtualization from the DX10 specs just to get stuff WHQL certified)
And every game I own runs half frame rate or less in Vista. Not to think of the HUMONGOUS footprint of the OS itself. You must be kidding if you think I'm going to get 2GB of RAM to make Vista run nearly as smooth as my XP machine on 1GB. Vista sucks right now. And probably will for a long time till the hardware industry catches up and makes 2GB the norm.
Oh BTW, asking people to switch to Linux or shut up is a stupid argument. While I love my open sauce as any other self-respectable geek on this planet, there are some things I cannot live without that doesn't work on Linux (nor Vista) - mainly Allegiance. And believe me, when you pay something exorbitant like 250$ for an OS, damn right do I have the right to complaint.

If you buy a new (gaming) PC today 2GB is the norm.
Another point is that Vista will make better use of DualCores. I have no framerate differences with an E6600 DualCore and 2GB RAM. Maybe it is all about hardware upgrade again vor Vista but as mentioned above it is the same as with every new Windows. In Germany (and I think not only here) there is the "Do nothing loop" gag since win98 is out. Another huge slowdown was from 98 to 2k without the proper PC. The same OS everybody nowadays tell it is/was the best system ever.
I am no Linux geek but afaik you should be able to run Allegiance. Dunno if it will be playable but it should run with a bit effort.
