Okay, so the default configuration sucks, and the sample config the academy offers still uses the arrow keys. I'd like to start off playing the game with a decent setup. Any suggestions?

If youre talking about using the arrow keys to rotate your ship, then the academy layout does keep the arrow keys. However, almost everyone here uses either a joystick or mouse to fly. If you want to use your mouse, activate the virtual joystick by either pressing num-0 or through the esc menu.

Everyone map theirs a bit differently depends on your keyboard structure ( I have a gaming keyboard therefore everything is fitted together differently than a regular one) and how do you prefer your hand to move around.

For me, I have all my controls mapped on my left hand and use my right hand to use joystick or mouse depends on what I'm doing. Mine is about the same as MadPeople's but just different target keys and combination of ctrl, shift, and alt.

Try to fly in trainning 6 a bit, try out new controls and see which one best fits you. I still change my controls around quite a bit after 8-9 month of playing after I learn something new I can do. ( IE: combination of sidetrusting, how to properly ram etc.) Try some combinations and see what fits you the best.

P.S. make sure you save your previous mappings before you try a new one. It's a headache after you know it won't work for me and try to switch it back. Or at least write it down somewhere.

Another hint: try to use shift/ctrl keys to double up key functions. Like Angela, I have everything accessible on the left hand, including this I find useful for my own style. For instance, I like having mounting shields and missiles configured to the Z key so I can drop my signature very quickly.

My main keys: WASD - thrusters, R and F for forward and back thruster
Roll: Q,E
100%/0% main thrust: T, G

The rest you'll need to figure out for yourself. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

BTW: Spend some time going through all of the possible controls before mapping. This will give you a survey of what's possible and what's desirable for your own style.

I use the numpad for dogfighting, the left hand of the keyboard for cargo management and targetting, and the middle for miscellaneous such as autopilot and cloaking. Mouse for looking and shooting.

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

klt, we have too similar avators and signitures. Everytime I see your post directly after mine I think about someone hack my account and posted another :(

Also, try write down your controls somewhere after you just changed it. It's seriously pain to try to find a remapped key in the middle of a "furball".

Remapping those keys will erase a ton of useful keys so make sure to remap them to other keys. I don't think I could stand those keys away from WASD. Ripcord and target enemy are used so damn much...

FYI: I have ripcord mapped to the Home key on my laptop. Ripping is like pulling the eject handle for a fighter pilot so I don't care if I let go out of the mouse. It's now also mapped onto one of my extra mouse buttons on my nifty new Logitech mouse. Target enemy is now V. Shift-V is target previous enemy. Ctrl-V is target enemy bbr. All in easy reach. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Like I said... map to your own style. And yes, you have to find other places for crucial functions.

One key difference between my mappings and everybody else: Booster is space bar, tab is chaff. I think it makes a big diff.
