MDL Utility is a program that can read .mdl files. It has a preview feature that allows you to preview each .mdl image without opening a new window. It also has the ability to import and export .mdl files. MDL Utility can be Found Here. See also MDLUtility2.

How do I start using MDLUtility?

When you click the link above, you will download the actual exe file, not an installer. You can run it from your desktop, but there is a better place to put the program. Copy the program to your artwork folder and create a shortcut on your desktop to it. If you do this, MDLUtility will open up with the artwork folder already open. If you use this program a lot, it will save you some time.

What are some of the features of MDLUtility?

  • Browse through .mdl files. MDLUtility comes with a preview feature that allows you to quickly look through .mdl files.
  • Import .mdl files using a .bmp image.
  • Export .mdl files into the .bmp format.
  • Show the details of .mdl files.

How do I use the Import/Export features?

Import

You will use the import feature if you wish to change the contents of an existing .mdl file. The steps to using the import feature are described below.

  1. Use MDLUtility to select the .mdl file that you would like to change.
  2. Click Import.
  3. Select the image that you would like to swap in.
    • Note that you MUST import an image that is the same resolution as the one that you are replacing.
    • If you wish to change the image size, you need to use MDLC.
  4. Click Save

Export

You will use the export feature if you wish to get a .bmp version of a .mdl file. The steps to using the import feature are described below.

  1. Use MDLUtility to select the .mdl file that you would like to export.
  2. Click Export.
  3. Select where you would like to save the image and press Save.

Demonstration of a common use of MDLUtility Making your own reticule.

  1. Find the reticule images in the artwork folder (centerinbmp.mdl and centeroutbmp.mdl)
  2. Use MDLUtility to export the files into the .bmp format.
  3. Use mspaint or your favorite image editing program to change the images.
  4. Use MDLUtility to import the files
    • Make sure not to mix up the centerin and centerout files. Doing so will cause them to not work.
    • Make sure to click Save after each file that you import. If you don't do this, the image will not be saved when you start the next one.
