This is a list of 'Allegiance phenomenons' (otherwise known as Allegiance Memes) that have come about mainly through web forum dialog on Alleg.net and past Allegiance community websites, but in some cases in the actual game itself.

Allegiance Memes

"That's the Federal Bomb Train Baby!"

Coined by FederalMan (Also known as Malicious Wraith) after destroying a chain of 4 tech bases. It has been since reused by multiple players, and by detractors of the meme to taunt people.

+1

While '+1' usually indicates simple agreement and is often used on mailing lists together with '+0', '-0' and '-1' -- it has some special and quite different meaning in Allegiance.

It is also sometimes stated as Postcount +1 and refers to users posting in a topic with little or no other purpose as to increase their overall postcount. Sometimes can be used as a joke, but often is seen as a No Comment, or lack of anything to say on account of the thread at large being overly silly, useless, or dead.

On the older forums administrators could stamp the "spammer" tag on a player, which also zeroed his post count. Some players "took advantage" of that feature by turning the "+1" meme in "+0" as their post count would not be modified by such a post.

Example: Agreed.
+1 :D

ABSORB THE MINES!

Originally said by ChildOfDeath during Allegiance Wars 4, occasionally used as a funny quote by older community members.

It refers to the fact that minefields (caltrops in particular) are gradually depleted the more damage they do to passing ships. If a lot of ships have flown through them, they hardly do any damage at all, so technically, you can remove a minefield or at least make it ineffective by 'absorbing' all its damage.

Doninator

A new player who presumably had nothing better to say than his own name (ad infinitum), Doninator received several bans for spamming the chat. However, a cult has developed around the figure, who wear a tag on the Allegiance forum containing "doninator Doninator DONINATOR!", and eagerly await his return (Source needed).

Unknown to the cult, Doninator still plays the game under a different nick.

Example:
  • Somebody posts: DONINATOR!
  • Lots reply: DONINATOR! DONINATOR! DONINATOR!

The only known in-game chatlog of Doninator's spamming (Excerpt from the DONINATOR Bible):

10/06/07 23:32:53: doninator199(4) (all): DONINATOR
10/06/07 23:32:54: Shorty9887(0) (all): that was random

10/06/07 23:33:05: doninator199(4) (all): DONINATOR

@FTW

Yanlin, a new player to the allegiance community, tried to create a new squad called For The Win! Because of Yanlin's poor reputation and worse potential for the squad; @FTW instantly turned into an "inside" joke within the Allegiance community. Certain characters, including TheSerb and Kite (both longtime veteran players) fed Yanlins dream of a squad when they 'joined' @FTW, things quickly degenerated from a weak attempt at a squad to satiricle and humourous fun for the amusement of many.

The squad was never created.

Example: Long time coined supersecretweapon of @FTW has finally emerged in this evenings scrimmage.

Kumshot

The act of bouncing off the enemy green door while piloting a Heavy Troop Transport. A reference to Kumquat's alleged infant-like HTT skills.

Noir For Comm

When there are no commanders volunteering to take over a team, one common suggestion by waiting players is 'Noir for comm!' or 'NFC!' The joke comes from Noir's outright refusal to command. This eventually branched off into several players using the feedback tool to repeatedly leave the "Good Commander" feedback for Noir.

This was halted when Pook threatened to give a 2 minute ban, repeated every day for a year, to those who spammed the feature.

NQIS

"NQIS" ("Not Quake In Space"): A term used to allude to the fact that Allegiance is fairly different from other online multiplayer games. It specifically refers to id Software's Quake series which was released around the same time as Allegiance, but can be taken to refer to the simplified controls of any First Person Shooter (FPS) game.

While Allegiance was being supported by Microsoft (2000-2002), Microsoft Games Studio had another space based game it touted named Starlancer, which it followed up in 2003 with Freelancer. These games both used the mouse and keyboard controls found in Allegiance, but without many of the extra commands. Reviewers at the time likened these two games to FPS games rather than traditional joystick based flight sims, however new players of Allegiance often assumed it was as simple as the newer Microsoft space sims (which ironically used simplified versions of the Allegiance flight system) and that just randomly shooting some enemy ships coming into their target reticules would make them good players.

While the exact origin of the term is unknown, it was popularized by veteran players "Pook" and "Dengaroth" to respond to these new players.

Penis Penis

Aeris (or Pos_21), the squad leader of Palidor's Knights, has been known on IRC for having, on several occasions, left his computer unattended and unlocked, while a friend (unbeknownst to Aeris) typed profanities on IRC, posing as Aeris. His friend also decided to log into the Allegiance forums and leave a lengthier post (NSFW)l describing, in greater detail, Aeris' supposed preference for male genitalia. The thread was promptly deleted.

It was after this incident that Aeris decided to begin locking his computer, saying "Remember kids, windows key + L".

Snakez

Technoflux heavy interceptors are often called 'Snakez'. This led to a lot of Technoflux teams getting called "ON A PLANE!" This originally emerged around the theater release of the movie and was modified to reflect the strange speech of Vegeta, who spawned this phenomenon.

Example: We've got snakez!!

Origin: Mastametz

Source: Vegeta/ "SnakeZ on a Plane"

STFN (Shoot the %&$!ing Nan)

This term became the battlecry of many an annoyed vet who watched a clueless newbie fly at a bombrun and only shoot the bomber, completely ignoring the trail of nanite equipped scouts behind it. This has nearly 0 effect in most cases, and merely provides the turrets of said bomber with a free and easy kill.

Example: STFN IDIOTS

Two Weeks™

This was originally associated with Your_Persona's confident (and false) prediction several years ago that he would have automated player statistics up and running within two weeks. The phrase gained fame after he failed to produce such a system. Player statistics were eventually added back into the game in a limited form we now see today which is part of the Allegiance Allegskill ranking system (Source needed).

Example: FAZ5 will be ready in Two Weeks™

Means FAZ5 will be ready in an indefinitely long time or "It will be ready when its ready".

______ IS CHEATING FACE THE FACTS!

This was originally posted in the rants forum several years ago as "KB IS CHEATING FACE THE FACTS!!!", in which the poster considered KB (kill bonus) to be 'cheating' and everybody else needed to 'face facts!', it quickly turned into meme as more and more Allegiance community members began jokingly posting what they thought was cheating (Source needed).

Example: TEAMWORK IS CHEATING FACE THE FACTS!!1

Rant-o-Matic

The Rant-o-Matic (now offline) is a tool written by Bacillen after a tongue-in-cheek suggestion by Anguirel for generating rants. Rants made by the rant-o-matic are easily identifiable because they follow the same pattern and have the same structure. It is slightly out of date now that both the senate is no-longer in existence and some of the people it rants about are no longer active.

Example rant:

I am ranting, whining, bickering, *&$%ed right off about the stack, IC Exp, noobs because they need to be nerfed, exhibit poor grammar, are better than me, just need to go away.
My proof is non-existant, but it's true, I swear, incomprehensible, not your concern.
If you doubt me, you are a weenie, a Carebear, an int whore.
I want Pook, Noir, the @Allegs to look into it, discipline them, fix it.
In conclusion, make me a sammich, that is all.

"."

The "." meme got wildly popular when a community member used the Edit feature of the forum boards to edit all of his posts in a heated, controversial thread to a single fullstop. Some players have used it to parody the original poster, but other players use it after realising they have been posting questionable opinions for three pages. In the later case it's intended to protect themselves from further flaming, but ends up doing their reputation more harm than good.

Mr Chaos' Phases of Allegiance

Based on the belief that all Allegiance players go through the same cycle Mr C codified the experience.

  • I. Wide eyed rookie ( many die sadly )
  • II. Wild eyed enthuiast ( can't keep them away with a fire hose usually have a @ by their name )
  • III. Jaded veteran ( you teach them and most still leave )
  • IV. Mr Fix it ( if only we did this or that it would a hundred times better but don't change that! )
  • V. Addict ( II-IV all rolled up together but no matter what your sticking until.... Burnt Out )
  • VI. Burnt Out ( you leave but pop back in and roll through phases II-V faster and faster )

Internet Memes

Below are some memes within the Allegiance community that are also common on the internet.

Cookies

Some users may show gratitude by stating that they are presenting other users with a cookie. It may also be used as a recognition of a embarrassing moment or failure, in a slightly condescending but friendly manner.

This meme is used frequently by Steel Fury.

Example: Shiz gets a cookie for ramming that con out
Example: Its okay MrC, have a cookie, we all hit rocks sometimes

Facepalm

A forum post which usually consists of a person, persons, animal or other object holding their hand/paw/appendage to their face in an expression of exasperation. Used to denote being fed up with a certain poster's antics.

Sammiches

Users sometimes show dominance by requesting that another user make them a 'sammich'. This is purposefully misspelled to reflect the possibly intoxicated nature of the original post.

Kumquat is perhaps this most prolific user of this meme.

Example: STFU, and make me a sammich noob!

Whoring

While common in other online games, whoring is a particularly widespread term in Allegiance and means to repeatedly kill the enemy over and over again, but not try to win the game. It is allegedly one of the oldest Allegiance memes.

Anyone can whore (verb) given a superior tech advantage over the enemy team, but someone is acclaimed as a whore (noun) if they can manage this irrespective of tech levels. The term has also been stretched to cover players that are proficient at a certain task, such as "prox whore", or "int whore".

______ is a LIE!!!

This is seen under various topics, usually when one user is calling another user's facts into question, a third user will post: ________ is a lie!, repeating it some number of times similar to a chant. Usually preceded by comments like "You can't have your cake and eat it too!" (GLaDOS begs to differ there).

Example: The cake is a lie
The cake is a lie
The cake is a lie
The cake is a lie
